It’s ironic.
How can we love Spelling?
In fact, I hated Spelling when I was in my younger days. I never love to spell. Spelling to me was a great torture!
Yet, I had no choice; I had to do well in Spelling as there would be marks counted towards Spelling in my final year of examinations.
Oh yes, I took my final year of exams 20 years ago. Surprisingly, we still have Spelling today in our school context.
So, how can we love Spelling?
First, we must understand the meaning of Spelling.
Why do you need to spell the word? How can we spell the words that we do not know?
There are strategies to get around this.
1) For example, sounding out the words help. Imagine that you are looking at that word inside your head and you are going to spell it out.
2) Look, cover, spell – look at the word, cover the word, and you start spelling it again.
3) Understand the meaning of the word and try to make an interesting story out from that word.
There could also be other strategies which could be useful too.
Now, why do we need to learn and love Spelling?
If you are someone who loves writing, you have to learn how to spell words. Otherwise, you will keep coming to your teacher on the exact spelling of those words which are not going to be very useful.
How many times can you ask your teacher before she or he gets frustrated?
Why do we need to write?
We need to write as we need to express ourselves clearly so that others can understand us.
This is the key reason for writing. Especially when we move up the ladder in upper primary, writing is going to be more important where we need to articulate and convey our thoughts clearly. That is not going to happen overnight. It takes a lot of practices and hard work before this can be achieved.
Therefore, I urge to everyone, please start loving how to SPELL your words before you be a good writer.
